Common Issues

Heat pump problems we fix

If your symptom isn't listed, give us a call — chances are we've seen it before.

Not heating or cooling properly

Often a refrigerant issue, a dirty filter, or a failing sensor. We diagnose the root cause rather than just topping up gas (which masks the real problem).

Strange noises or vibration

Rattling, gurgling, or grinding usually points to a fan motor, compressor, or loose mounting. Catching it early saves the unit.

Leaking water indoors

Almost always a blocked or kinked drain line. A quick fix when caught early — expensive ceiling damage when it isn't.

Error codes on the controller

Each manufacturer uses different fault codes. Our techs carry the diagnostic kits for Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Panasonic.

Outdoor unit iced over

In winter, light frost is normal. Heavy ice build-up means the defrost cycle isn't working — could be a sensor, a reversing valve, or refrigerant charge.

Won't turn on at all

Could be the power supply, the controller, the indoor PCB, or a tripped safety. We isolate and confirm before quoting any parts.

FAQ

Heat pump repair questions

How much do heat pump repairs cost?

Most common repairs (sensor replacement, drain unblock, fan motor) sit between $150 and $450 including parts and labour. Compressor or PCB faults are more — typically $600 to $1,500. We always provide a fixed quote after diagnosis, so you can decide whether to repair or replace before any work starts.

Is it worth repairing an old heat pump?

Generally yes if the unit is under 10 years old and the repair is under about 50% of replacement cost. Older units (15+ years) are often less efficient and parts get harder to source — at that point a new high-efficiency unit usually pays for itself within a few years. We give you honest advice, not a sales pitch.

Do you repair heat pumps near me in Hamilton or Cambridge?

Yes. We're based in Te Awamutu and cover Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, Raglan, Morrinsville, Matamata, plus the wider King Country, Coromandel, and Bay of Plenty. Most areas get same-week service.

Can you repair my heat pump if Airmax didn't install it?

Absolutely. We service and repair heat pumps installed by anyone — including units bought from big-box retailers. Bring us in for a one-off repair or shift your ongoing servicing to us; either is fine.

What brands of heat pump do you repair?

We're authorised technicians for Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Panasonic, and we work on most other brands sold in NZ. If we can't fix it (rare), we'll tell you upfront rather than charge you to find out.

How quickly can someone come out?

Most non-urgent repairs are booked within 3–5 working days. If the heat pump is your only heating in winter and you've got vulnerable family at home, tell us when you book — we prioritise emergencies.

Do you offer a warranty on repairs?

Yes. All workmanship is covered for 12 months, and any parts we install carry the manufacturer's warranty (typically 12 months minimum, longer on some components).
