Airmax

Air Conditioning

Cooling, heating, and climate control across the Waikato & beyond

One system, year-round comfort

In New Zealand, "air conditioning" and "heat pump" mean the same thing for modern residential systems — a reverse-cycle inverter unit that cools in summer and heats in winter. So when Airmax installs your AC, you're also getting the most efficient heating system available, all from the same equipment.

We install high-wall, floor console, multi-split, and fully ducted systems across the Waikato, King Country, Coromandel, and Bay of Plenty. Authorised Mitsubishi Electric installer; we also install Daikin, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Panasonic.

Types of air conditioning we install

High-wall air conditioning

The most common and most cost-effective air conditioning option. Single indoor unit mounted high on the wall, paired with an outdoor condenser. Cools (and heats) one room or open-plan area efficiently. Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices.

Floor console air conditioning

Slim floor-mounted units that replace old fireplaces or night-store heaters. Same cooling and heating performance as high-wall, but at floor level — better when wall space is limited or you want consistent floor-to-ceiling air movement.

Ducted air conditioning

Whole-home or whole-building cooling, hidden in the ceiling cavity with only discreet grilles visible. Multi-zone control means different rooms can run at different temperatures. The premium option for new builds and larger homes.

Multi-split systems

One outdoor condenser feeding 2–5 indoor units. The cost-effective way to cool multiple rooms without the install cost of fully ducted. Ideal for retrofits and renovations.

FAQ

Air conditioning questions

What's the difference between air conditioning and a heat pump?

In New Zealand, the terms are used interchangeably for residential systems. A modern "heat pump" is a reverse-cycle air conditioner — it cools in summer (air conditioning mode) and heats in winter (heat pump mode) using the same equipment. So when you buy a heat pump in NZ, you're getting an air conditioner too. The naming convention just emphasises whichever function the manufacturer wants to highlight.

How much does air conditioning cost in NZ?

Installed prices for a single high-wall AC system typically range from $2,500 to $4,500. Floor consoles are similar. Multi-split systems run $5,000 to $8,000 depending on the number of indoor units. Ducted air conditioning starts around $10,000 and scales up based on the number of zones and the size of the home. We provide fixed quotes after a free site visit.

Do I need air conditioning in New Zealand?

Most NZ homes manage without it for a long time, but increasingly hot summers — especially in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty — make AC a practical investment. The big advantage of a modern heat pump is that you get cooling and efficient heating from the same unit, so you're not buying "just" air conditioning — you're upgrading your whole climate control year-round.

What's the best air conditioning system for a NZ home?

It depends on the layout. For a single living area or bedroom, a high-wall heat pump is hard to beat on cost-vs-performance. For an open-plan home or larger property, a multi-split or fully ducted system gives you room-by-room control. We recommend the right setup based on your floor plan, insulation, and how you actually use each space.

Do you install ducted air conditioning?

Yes. We install ducted air conditioning systems across the Waikato, King Country, Coromandel, and Bay of Plenty. Ducted is best installed during a new build or major renovation, but we can also retrofit it into existing homes with suitable ceiling space.

Which air conditioning brands do you sell?

We're an Authorised Mitsubishi Electric installer; we also install Daikin, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Panasonic. These are the most reliable brands sold in NZ — well-supported with parts, long warranties, and technicians who know them inside and out.

How loud is air conditioning?

Modern inverter-driven systems are very quiet — most high-wall units run at 18–25 dBA on low fan speed, which is quieter than a whisper. Outdoor condensers are louder (around 45–55 dBA at 1m) but neighbour-friendly placement and modern designs keep them well below noise complaint levels.
